TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hurricane Helene is rapidly intensifying as it continues its path north-northeast towards Florida.

Video captured Wednesday night shows the outer bands of the storm lashing parts of South Florida, with strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Hurricane Helene: ’Catastrophic’ storm surge expected in parts of Florida

In a Thursday morning update, the National Hurricane Center said the hurricane has maximum sustained winds at 90 mph and is moving at 12 mph.

In Mexico’s Quintana Roo, Helene brought strong winds and heavy rain as the hurricane continued to intensify on Wednesday. The storm obstructed visibility as it battered parts of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The NHC expects Hurricane Helene to bring “catastrophic winds and storm surge” to the Northeastern Gulf Coast.
