BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital is educating the public about sepsis.

September is National Sepsis Awareness Month, and before the month ends, hospital officials organized a walk to help raise awareness.

A person becomes septic when their body’s response to infection damages its own tissues and organs. It could be caused by infections from cuts, ear aches, urinary tract infections, and more.

Common symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, lethargy, and difficulty breathing.

Hospital officials say it’s crucial to detect sepsis early to avoid major complications or even death.

“Sepsis is very important to me because it is that diagnosis which can be diagnosed pretty quickly, easily and if caught early, can be completely treated to avoid a fatal complication. We have to increase awareness so people seek medical treatment immediately when they have these signs and symptoms,” Florida Gulf Coast Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sushma Banda said.
