JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – Jackson County commissioners are looking forward to bringing a new museum to the area after voting yes on the demolition project on a property in Endeavor Park.

The former dozier school for boys will soon house items that are historic to Jackson County.

City officials say this museum will not only preserve history but also create jobs.

“I think just so that our history is preserved and so that, you know, for the generations to come, we have a place where the history of how all the things that make us Jackson County are sort of kept and the stories told. And so in addition to that, you have the added benefit of that economic development piece. You know, hopefully, some jobs will come out of it and that sort of thing,” County Administrator Wilanne Daniels said.

Contractors will demolish only a portion of the building. That includes the roof, windows, and the doors. The first phase is estimated to cost a million dollars.

“Basically taking it down to a concrete shell and then once all that’s done will come in and do some additional structural analysis, make sure everything is safe to rebuild own, and then start the design process to rebuild it and make it a functional museum for the future,” Deputy County Administrator Rett Daniels said.

The county received and matched a 500-thousand dollar grant from the state. Daniels says phase one of the museum project will most likely be done by the end of the year.

In the next phase, they’ll design the building.

“And then we’ll go into the next phase, which will be hopefully all part of this first grant where we’ll put a new roof on it and windows, new doors. And so it will be ready to then pursue the next phase of funding that will start to actually do the architectural design for the exhibits and designing the exhibits,” Daniels said.

City officials say they are not sure when the museum will be completed, but they are happy that they can finally get this project rolling.
