BAY COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – The Bay County History Museum is displaying some cherished Bay High School artifacts from long ago.

“We have a majorette uniform. It belonged to Joanne Silcox. We have her complete costume. It consisted of a hat, and we’ve got her dress and we’ve got her boots, and we’ve got her baton,” Bay County Historical Society Vice President Bob Hurst said.

The Bay High majorettes used to perform with the marching band at sports events and parades, twirling their batons while sporting a dress, hat, and cowgirl boots. Bay County Historical Society Vice President Bob Hurst graduated from Bay High in 1961. He said he has fond memories of watching the majorettes at football games.

“The girls that were in it, they were beautiful girls back then. It was just a pleasure to see them out there performing. Then we would have parades and they would be leading the parades downtown on Harrison Avenue,” Hurst said.

You can also go back in time by flipping through some of Bay High’s first-ever yearbooks. Bay High alumna Laura Landgraf-Snyder was looking through her mother’s 1920s yearbook, learning about who she was during her high school years.

“She was senior editor and she was also chosen as a lot of the most popular [superlatives] and all of that kind of stuff,” Landgraf-Snyder said.

Bay High alum said it’s important to preserve Bay High’s history, as it’s a cornerstone in the community.

“It’s really amazing to think about how deep the history is that deep. We need to preserve it and protect it and enjoy it, Go Bay!,” Bay High alumna Class of 1964 Skipper Frudaker-Powell said.

If you have any Bay High School memorabilia you’d like to donate, the Bay County History Museum will be happy to accept it.
