Boot Camp: Fieldcrest’s numbers are up, so are the players’ spirits heading into season

MINONK, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The numbers are up at Fieldcrest.

So is the enthusiasm for the Knights football program. Fieldcrest has 41 players out for football this fall, up from 33 last year and 27 players two years ago.

And the two biggest classes are the sophomores (12 players) and freshmen (11). That’s what happens when your team goes from 1-8 in 2022 to one game out of a playoff spot a year later.

“In school we’ve had a culture change. People want to be a part of (football),” said head coach Nick Meyer. “It’s a testament to our kids for being recruiters in the hallway, asking people if they want to give football a shot. Even if you’re nervous about it, we welcome all comers.”

The Knights played six playoff teams a year ago and finished 4-5. The team is optimistic as it brings back eight returning starters on offense and seven on defense.

Four-year starter Eddie Lorton returns at running back and figures to be the centerpiece of the offense. Linebacker Jackson Hakes and lineman Chance Hedrick are key returners on the defense.

The older players are glad to see an influx of young blood coming into the program.

“We just try to bring them in, show them how it’s been and how we do it. Show them the ropes, help them out,” said senior receiver Ejay Johnson. “In a small school, you don’t have many kids. Everyone has to do their role to fill out the team.”

Fieldcrest hosts Macon Meridian in the season opener Friday.
