PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Pekin scored 27 straight points in the first half and hung on in the second half to close out a 34-33 win over host Dunlap in Mid-Illini Conference football opener Friday.

Sophomore Dylan Anderson had three TD receptions for Pekin but his biggest play may have come in the final seconds of the game. He intercepted a pass to seal the game as Dunlap attempted a two-point conversion for the lead.

Anderson caught a 46-yard TD pass from Brogan Benassi to put Pekin ahead 34-27 with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter. But John Bargen hit Mack Sutter with an 11-yard TD with 26 seconds left to make it a 34-33 game.

The Eagles, who roared out to a 14-0 lead then fell behind 27-14 at halftime, decided to go for the lead with a two-point conversion. But Anderson picked off Bargen’s pass in the endzone.

Other Mid-Illini Conference winners included Washington, East Peoria and Morton. Big 12 Conference winners included Normal Community, Bloomington, Normal West, Peoria High and Notre Dame.

Other football winner on Friday night included U-High, Eureka, El Paso-Gridley, Tri-Valley, Farmington, Elmwood-Brimfield, Stark County, Olympia, and LeRoy.
