CHILLICOTHE, Ill. (WMBD) — The Illinois Department of Transportation hopes a change in the speed limit will reduce the number of crashes on a local route.

According to Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Paul Wappel, crashes along Illinois Route 29 caused officials to change the speed limit from 55 to 45 mph.

“Due to a disproportionate number of crashes along this section of Illinois Route 29 through Rome, with a significant number of them related to the speed of traffic on Illinois Route 29, the speed limit was reduced from 55mph to 45mph,” Wappel said. “The change is permanent.”

There have been a number of crashes in the area, including a deadly crash that killed two in August and a crash that killed two in March .

‘Blunt force trauma’ was the cause of death for two in Peoria County motorcycle accident

Drivers on Illinois Route 29 near Chillicothe and Rome should pay attention to the change in speed limit to avoid citations and crashes in the area.

The reason the speed limit never changed before was because that can make the area potentially more dangerous. This is a trial to see if changing the speed limit will help slow traffic down in the residential area of Rome because that is what the RESIDENCE in the area want. Let's not try to make it more dramatic than it really is by using a photo from a crash on a different area of 29 and citing a deadly crash that happened on a different stretch of 29 MILES from Rome. They have no relevance at all to the speed limit being changed.
