PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Two teenage boys are in custody at the county’s Juvenile Detention Center after being arrested for possessing a stolen vehicle.

A third person, an 11-year-old girl, was also caught but she was released to the custody of her mother, Peoria police said.

Officers saw one of the boys allegedly firing shots from inside a vehicle near the intersection of Griswold and Krause streets just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Case of boy charged with throwing a cat out a speeding car will remain in juvenile court

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled at a high rate of speed before crashing into a stop sign in the 1300 block of South Westmoreland Avenue. Three people — the two boys, both 15, and the girl — got out and ran away before begin caught.

The vehicle, Peoria police said, had been reported stolen. Officers could not find a handgun near where they were found or along their flight path.

One of the 15-year-olds was booked into the detention center on charges of possession of a stolen motor vehicle and several traffic offenses. The other 15-year-old was booked for possessing a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.

It was not immediately clear if any of the youths had been formally charged in the juvenile division of Peoria County Circuit Court.
