CANTON, Ill. (WMBD) — The Canton Police is warning people about a voting scam as Election Day approaches.

According to Canton police , a few residents have reported that some community members have received text messages that invite them to vote in the general election via text message.

Yes, voter fraud happens. But it’s rare and election offices have safeguards to catch it

The Fulton County Clerk and Recorder Patrick O’Brian confirmed with police that these texts are scams. O’Brian said that it’s currently impossible to vote via text under Illinois law, and the technology does not exist.

O’Brian said this is most likely a phishing scheme and anyone who receives the text should report it to local police, or delete it without clicking on any attached links.

Those planning to vote can do so early in-person in the courthouse, at the polls on election day, or vote by mail.

if you get such a message, call the Canton Police Department.
