CHICAGO (WMBD) — Some Illinois residents will be able to skip the lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

It’s all possible by machines the Secretary of State is calling Fast-Lane kiosks. These devices are found at some Mariano’s grocery stores across Illinois.

A resident of Illinois can renew their driver’s license, state ID or vehicle registration at the kiosks.

The machine scans the bar code of the current registration card or renewal notice, and the kiosk produces what is requested.

Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois Secretary of State, shared that it will make life easier for people who need something from the DMV.

“The kiosks provide another option that doesn’t require a special trip or an appointment at the facility,” he said. “More options translate into more conveniences and an improved overall customer experience.”

Earlier this year, the Secretary of State’s office launched their on-the-go DMV vans, another way residents in Illinois can access motor vehicle services.

Giannoulias shares the impact the machines will have on rural areas in Illinois.

“In rural areas in Illinois, where sometimes DMV’s are very far away, this allows an individual or a family on their way out of the grocery store to avoid having to drive thirty, forty-five minutes an hour just to get to a place, park their vehicle, go inside and get it done,” he said.
