They are flushing the fire hydrants to ensure quality water for fire protection. The flushing may cause water pressure to temporarily drop or change color according to American Water.

If you notice color change in your water they suggest refrain from doing laundry and running cold water and it will clear on its own.

American Water is also be treating the water with a form of chlorine called “Free chlorine” according to their release. You may notice a chlorine taste or smell to your water they assure there is no cause for concern.

This “free chlorine” is typically used to clean public water systems and is monitored by their professionals closely.
