CLEARWATER, Fla. (WNCT) — The American Athletic Conference has suspended East Carolina University head coach Cliff Godwin and player Dixon Williams for their role in Thursday’s incident during the Wichita State game.
Officials said that, in accordance with NCAA Baseball Playing Rules, Godwin will be suspended for two games while Williams will be suspended one. Both will miss Friday’s win-or-go-home game with Rice, scheduled for 1 p.m. If the Pirates win Friday, Godwin would miss Saturday’s game with Wichita State, slated for 9 a.m. If the Pirates lose, Godwin would miss the NCAA Tournament opening-round game.
ECU has to win on Friday and then two more times on Saturday to reach Sunday’s AAC Tournament final.
The AAC reports Godwin was ejected from Thursday’s 14-4 loss and was assessed an additional two-game suspension for violating NCAA Rule 2-26-h, which states that “no team personnel may continue to argue or to continue to excessively express themselves with prolonged action or offensive language after an ejection.”
Williams was given the one-game suspension for violating NCAA Rule 8-7, which prohibits “unnecessary and violent collisions with the catcher at home plate, and with infielders at all bases.”
