GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Sheppard Memorial Library in Downtown Greenville is expecting a new director soon.

Roman Leary will step up as Director of Sheppard Memorial Library on August 26. Leary will be replacing Greg Needham, who served as director for 15 years. The library’s Board of Trustees voted for Leary after considering multiple applicants.

“Roman really impressed both the library staff and the trustees with his passion, expertise, and charm” said Board Chair Rick Smiley. “We are confident he will be an asset in our community and continue a long tradition of outstanding leadership.”

Leary previously served as Director of Edgecombe County Memorial Library, where he started in 2009. He also attended East Carolina University before graduating from NC Central University in 2006 with a Masters in Library Science.

“Leading Sheppard Memorial Library at this time in its history is a huge opportunity,” said Leary. “It’s already a widely regarded public library with an incredible staff and enthusiastic community support. My goal is to maintain and extend this tradition of excellence.”

The library first opened to the public almost 100 years ago, in 1930.
