HAVELOCK, N.C. (WNCT) — Governor Roy Cooper stopped at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Tuesday. He spoke with military leaders from across the state and heard their concerns about what needs to be fixed on the bases.

The main takeaway was that the state needed to invest more in public education and childcare. Gov. Cooper said that in his last couple months in office, he’s going to continue working on creating a coalition of people to support public education.

They want bipartisan groups who will go to the legislature and support it. Gov. Cooper said that instead of focusing on private school vouchers, we need to do things like pay teachers more and build more schools.

“It just shows us we need to do better. They hear it from their Soldiers and their Marines and their Sailors, that and their Airmen that that they need quality education for their children,” Gov. Cooper said. “So, that investment is going to be critical.”

Gov. Cooper also expressed his gratitude to those in the military and their families.
