WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — A piece of Washington history was demolished on Aug. 13 when the Snowd Branch gathering shelter was torn down.

Under that shelter, people gathered for revivals and church services. Now, pieces of that original structure will be used to carry on that tradition of coming together in worship.

“I do know that this building is 100 years old. We actually, last year, had our 100 th celebration for the camp meeting here,” Snowd Branch Camp Committee Member Zach Woolard said. “Its been used for camp meetings all the way back to the 1900s.”

“This building will be on the ground within hours. After that, we will have dump trucks coming in, we will haul all of the materials away,” Cool Springs Construction Owner Brian Furlough said. “Then it will be shaped up on the leveling out reading.”

Elements of the shelter have been replaced throughout the years. Now, the structure will be replaced by a metal shelter. Some parts will be reclaimed from the demolition to create the new shelter.

Members of the Snowd Branch Camp board said the new space will allow people to continue to gather to worship.
