GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Law enforcement officers encounter many different situations that make it important to have resources for their mental health.

Representatives with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said they start emotional training in rookie school and enforcement training. They said emotional wellbeing training never ends.

“Law enforcement sees and deals with a lot of violence, gun violence, domestic violence,” Pitt County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Sargeant Lee Darnell said. “It’s a very difficult situation. Violence toward officers, ourselves, death threats, physical altercations. So, it’s something that takes constant mental and physical preparedness.”

They said they have mandatory in-service training every year with topics like wellness and de-escalation of situations.
