CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. (WNCT) — A sewer line break happened Saturday evening on base at Camp Lejeune along Brewster Blvd at around 6:20 p.m.

Workers with the Public Works Division were notified of a main sewer line break along near the intersection of Stone Street. During repair, the flow from a lift station was diverted to an open ditch to prevent it getting into surface waters.

Early Sunday morning, the wastewater exceeded capacity and a breach of roughly 54,000 gallons spilled into the New River.

Vacuum trucks were used to remove excess wastewater and lime was put down in the impacted area. The break in the main was repaired Sunday at 2:15 a.m. Water samples at the site of the spill will be taken by base coordinators with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality.

The NCDOEQ is reviewing the spill.
