WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) — A massive project in three North Carolina counties will start next week to improve 20 railroad crossings in areas of east of Raleigh, officials say.

CSX Transportation will start work on August 26 to resurface the railroad crossings in Wilson, Nash and Johnston counties — with most work happening in Wilson County.

Southern Commercial Development, which coordinates road closures and detours, released the information about the project Tuesday along with the below list of crossing locations and projected dates. Work is expected to last for a month until September 27, according to officials with the company.

The crossings will be closed to traffic twice because all of the 20 crossings are double-tracked, according to a news release from Southern Commercial Development.

All closings will last between three and five days.

“On the crossings that are one way in/out with residents behind them, CSX will try and get these worked and completed in 12 hours,” Southern Commercial said in the news release.

The only two crossings in Johnston County that are listed will only be getting new ties the week of Sept 4.

“Please note that any/all dates are subject to change due to weather and/or other unforeseen conditions,” the news release said.
