JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Onslow County Schools officially has its new weapons detecting system in place and they unveiled it and conducted training Wednesday.

There will be at least three of them in every high school this year. One thing the district wants to emphasize is that it is not a metal detector, it’s looking for things shaped like weapons.

That’s why they are asking students and staff to take out things like binders, laptops, umbrellas and glasses cases before walking through the detectors.

“It’s not facial recognition, it’s not doing anything like that,” Onslow County Schools Chief Communications Officer Brent Anderson said. “It doesn’t record or keep any information along those lines. And there was an incident where, say there wasn’t something that didn’t need to be on campus. That information is available for us to go back and get.”

For the time being, these detectors are just going to be at the high schools starting the first day of class next week.
