WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — The City of Washington is starting a drainage project in the medical district.

City leaders are looking to improve the intersection of Brown, 12th and 15th streets as the area is prone to major flooding during storms. The project is expected to improve stormwater flow from the area to Jacks Creek.

“Regular rainstorms, you’ll see some some inconveniences. But when we do have a more catastrophic weather event, hurricanes, things of that nature, it really does inhibit traffic,” Washington City Manager Jonathan Russell said. “So, from a public safety standpoint, this will help to ensure that the hospital is always accessible during times of emergency.”

The city received a $3.8 million grant from the Golden Leaf Foundation to help with the $5.6 million project. Leaders hope to begin construction in October and expect the project to take six to eight months to complete.
