HOLLY RIDGE, N.C. (WNCT) – People living in the area near the J&J Snack Foods facility may continue to experience strong odors following a fire at the facility last Monday. That fire caused significant structural damage, according the Holly Ridge Fire Department.

In a Facebook post from the department Saturday, officials said the building is unsafe to occupy at this time. Air quality tests and safety protocols were conducted following the fire, as well as an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Crews continue cleanup efforts at the plant.

“One issue that may affect the public is peculiar odors emitting from the property. A product in the refrigeration system has a pungent smell when released in the atmosphere. Damaged pipes may have residual product in them that is causing this odor,” the fire department said.

Officials said the hazardous materials storage area was not affected by the fire. Equipment surrounding the piping in the vicinity of the fire was shut down.

The Holly Ridge Fire Department said it is closely monitoring any residual impacts.

According to the Jacksonville Onslow Economic Development website, J&J Snack Foods Corporation employees about 140 people. The company is one of the largest employers in the area.
