GREENVILLE, N.C (WNCT)- There’s a new memorial in Greenville honoring the life and legacy of BMX Legend Dave Mirra.

He died in 2016 after calling Greenville home for years. His death sent shockwaves across the world. Now, his legacy lives through the Dave Mirra Foundation, which is run by those who love him. With help from the community, and eight years of committing to honoring Mirra’s legacy, a statue will stand forever at the entrance of Jaycee Park.

“It’s a little bit surreal to think that after eight years, here we are,” Mirra’s wife, Lauren Blackwell said. “We’ve had this statue for a while. The community was so generous and came together to have a fundraiser. So, the statue has been designed, fabricated and waiting for this special day. I think it’s a perfect day. It’s near perfect, I should say. His mom passed away two months ago and if she could be here, it would make it perfect. But, our daughters are one of Dave’s biggest legacies. And here they are old enough to be a part of this with us, really fully engaged. So, to me, it’s that much more special as a mom.”
