NEWPORT, N.C. (WNCT) — A Newport intersection is causing concerns among drivers.

Drivers can no longer make a right turn on red at Hibbs Road onto Highway 24. This was implemented in July. People in the community said they’re still seeing people go right on red.

A sign is in place telling people not to make the turn. North Carolina Department of Transportation Traffic Engineer said in a five-year period, the intersection had 49 crashes.

‘We’re going to be put in advanced flashers on Highway 24 and advance both directions. Be prepared to stop when flashing in advance of the light,” Evans said.

All the money we invest in roadways, just create a new network there with a yield and right turn into a short merging lane! How hard can it be to add a small triangle island and a short lane. Then there will be no more stopping on red there to turn right and people can merge safely.

I wonder how many of those 49 wrecks were from people turning right on red? Cause I've actually seen alot accidents from people turning left on that road from 24
