WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Beaufort County Community College’s “Beaufort Promise Scholarship” is used to cover tuition and fees for residents of Beaufort, Tyrrell, Hyde and Washington Counties for their college courses.

The scholarship is to help eliminate the barrier students have with receiving a higher education. Since it has been in place, the enrollment is up 26 percent since the 2019-2020 academic school year. They now have around 7,000 students.

President of Beaufort County Community College Dr. David Loope said that their mission is about enhancing socio-economic development in this area and that this scholarship helps out with that.

“It’s extremely gratifying for a professional who’s been in the field, such as I have for 35 years, to finally be able to achieve something I’ve wanted to achieve for many decades for the benefit of people all across this region, Dr. Loope said. “This is one of the poorest regions in North Carolina, on the East Coast, in America for that reason, for that matter. And I think that this enables us to make a tremendous difference in the daily lives of people who live in this area and in a positive way. That’s why I get up every day.”

He said the cost of the scholarship is roughly $700 per student.
