NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — The Craven County Health Department was notified of a raccoon that tested positive for rabies Aug. 27.

The raccoon was found on St. John’s Road in the Western part of the county. Prevention of rabies is based on protection and management of people and animals exposed to rabies.

    Health experts said people should:

    • Vaccinate pets
    • Control measures for pets exposed to rabies
    • Control measures for people exposed to rabies
    • Limit stray and feral animals
    • Leave wildlife alone

Craven-Pamlico Animal Services Center provides low-cost rabies vaccinations during normal business hours Tuesday through Saturday. The cost is $10 and it is open to the public.
