Duke Energy announces rate increase in September, drop in January

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WGHP) — Duke Energy customers in North Carolina will see some shifts in their energy bills over the coming months.

According to a release from Duke Energy Carolinas, customers will see their rates fall on Jan. 1, 2025, after a temporary increase at the beginning of September. This is part of “an annual adjustment for the cost of fuel used to generate electricity.”

Duke says that starting Jan. 1, customers will see a decrease of about 3.6% from their current rates based on the typical usage of 1,000 kilowatt-hours a month. This will be around $5.17 on average.

Commercial customers will see a decrease of around 7.4%.

This drop at the beginning of the new year, however, will be preceded by a slight shift upward, about 1.5% for an average customer, starting on Sept. 1.

“A proposed decrease for Duke Energy Progress customers is currently being evaluated by regulators; if approved, those customers would also see rates decline starting Dec. 1,” according to the company.
