Sea turtle nest excavation in Emerald Isle

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WNCT) — One Monday, around 90 sea turtles hatched on the beach in Emerald Isle. The Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Rescue has worked all season to ensure that the sea turtles were safe.

On Wednesday, the rescue group returned to the nest to count the eggs and see if any hatchlings were left behind. A group of spectators gathered to watch the excavation. This nest, nest 10, had a 96% hatch rate with three undeveloped eggs in the nest.

All of the egg shells were returned to the nest and covered back up after they were all accounted for.

Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Patrol said they will continue to monitor other nests in the area throughout the coming days.
