ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — A historic airfield recently got a makeover.

In Holly Ridge, a World War II Field at Camp Davis is now going to be able to support aircrafts again. The project costs near $28 million dollars. During the project, the runway was torn up and completely resurfaced.

Now it strikes fighters, ospreys and other heavy aircrafts can take off and land there again. It was built in 1941 and its peak was home to over 20,000 people. It had nearly 1,000 buildings and 32 miles of paved streets along the airfield.
