FAISON, N.C. (WNCT/WNCN) – A woman died in a fiery crash that appeared to involve a single car Saturday morning on Interstate-40 eastbound near Warsaw at the Duplin and Sampson County line.

Numerous emergency crews were on the scene near Faison until the highway finally reopened around 3 p.m.

According to a Facebook post from Faison Fire, around 10:45 a.m., I-40 eastbound between exit 355 at Faison and exit 364 at Warsaw was closed. I-40 westbound was down to one lane of travel in the same area.

The Sampson Independent reported that a 33-year-old Wendell woman died in the crash near N.C. 402. The newspaper had a photo of a burned-out vehicle that had crashed into a highway overpass support in the median of the highway — between two guardrails.

Speed and reckless driving were factors in the wreck, according to The Sampson Independent .

The wreck caused major traffic backups this holiday weekend, up to three miles.

Officials said a detour was set up while the highway was closed.

CBS 17 has reached out to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol for information about the wreck.

Friday afternoon I watched road rage in that same section of I-40 east as a car tried to do 120 around other cars but got blocked. People are selfish and won't hesitate to kill you. Thankfully, this woman only took out herself. I'm sorry for her family to have to deal with this, but it could have been all of them dead plus other families grieving right now. Chill people. Have some patience on the road. It means our lives.
