KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Lenoir County Schools has many precautions to keep students safe, including controlled access to all buildings, receptionists at the front of every building, and metal detectors at all games and activities.

Another important aspect of the county’s safety is the presence of school resource officers (SROs.) Lenoir County Schools have SROs in every middle and high school, and representatives with the school system said they just submitted a safety grant to request SROs in all elementary schools as well.

The goal is to do regular foot patrols throughout the schools, be a resource for students to talk and report incidents to, as well as, for the staff. Lenoir County officials said they’re always looking for ways to make their schools safer.

“We want to make sure our students return to their parents every day, exactly as they came to us, just a little bit smarter,” Lenoir County Schools Public Information Officer Rebecca McGann said. “So, that is something that we focus on incredibly. And we are taking the active steps to make sure that our students are safe every day when they come to school.”
