GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Governor’s Crime Commission voted to approve $3.5 million in grants to provide violence intervention programs.

This decision comes after discussions of challenges in crime victim services that are provided across the state. The commission awarded 18 grants to support treatment courts, domestic violence intervention programs and behavioral health services.

The plans align with the state’s first office of violence prevention which was established in 2013 by the Department of Public Safety. Locally, the University Health System of Eastern North Carolina in Greenville, as well as, Lenoir County Inc.’s Domestic Violence Intervention in Kinston and Snow Hill were among the 18 grants given out.
