HOLLY RIDGE, N.C. (WNCT) — Holly Ridge is still accepting applications for a new mayor after former Mayor Jeff Wenzel abruptly resigned last month.

This is the third time since last November that the council has had to fill a vacant seat. The first to go was former Councilman Aaron Ritter in February. He was replaced by Councilman Pete Parnian.

Then, Councilwoman Carolyn Stanley died in July and was replaced by Councilman Walter Zabicki. Former Mayor Wenzel then abruptly resigned in August.

Mayor Pro Tem Joshua Patti said a little more transition time would’ve been best, but he still respects Wenzel’s decision and that he is not running for mayor.

“I would love to, but I think having that vote on council is extremely important. Unfortunately, the mayor doesn’t vote in the town of Holly Ridge,” Patti said. “I don’t want to say the mayor is a figurehead because the mayor can, you know, promote legislation and have ideas and represents the town well with their, you know, in their interests. But I personally feel that having that extra added vote really can promote change.”
