GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — During a meeting Monday night, the Greenville City Council approved an agreement to sell a property located at 2815 E. 10th Street and E. Fifth Street.

The property was previously home to the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and the State Highway Patrol. It is made up of about 2.05 acres and zoned commercial.

The city owns 83 percent of the property while the remaining 17 percent belongs to the county. The city and county no longer have use for the property as the building and site are in poor condition.

“It would just be too costly for the city to try and do anything on that property and at the same time I think we also recognize that the property didn’t allow a lot of room for additional growth once we did establish something there,” City of Greenville Public Information Officer Brock Letchworth said.

According to the appraisal, most of the property’s value is in the land and the best use would be redevelopment. The sale would allow the property to go back on the tax roll and allow for redevelopment.

The two-acre property is now looking for its next bidder, one who sees value in the commercial zoning space.

“So, we feel like the best option was to put it on the market and let a developer or someone come in that feels like they could better utilize the property, let them have a chance at doing so,” Letchworth said. “Additionally, it puts it back on the tax roll, helps the city with its revenue, and that helps us provide additional services and will help us invest in some of the projects for you that are needed that we considered for this space.”

The city will begin the bid process with a minimum bid of more than $1.9 million.
