WHITSETT, N.C. (WGHP) — A suspected robber is dead after an attempted robbery of a Brink’s Armored Truck on Tuesday morning, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies came to the parking lot of the Stoney Creek Village shopping center on 6307 Burlington Road in Whitsett after getting a report of an attempted robbery of a Brink’s truck.

While deputies were on their way to the scene they learned that a shooting had occurred.

At the scene, investigators found the suspected armed robber dead from a gunshot wound.

The sheriff’s office says the attempted robbery and subsequent fatal shooting was an isolated incident and there is no immediate threat to the community.

A witness at the scene tells FOX8 they heard gunshots in the area and saw people running for cover.

“I was scared to go over there,” said a woman who was going to Food Lion to buy ice cream for her kids. “We moved to this area .. because we thought it would be safe, and it’s not.”

She was parked about 60 feet away from the ATM in her car when she heard the shots.

“I got out when I was on the phone with the lady from 911 and went to look at him. The man was lying on the ground, and … he moved a little bit,” she said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective J. Wright at (336) 641-5971 or Guilford County Crime Stoppers at 336-373-1000.
