GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Students across Eastern North Carolina are learning about the history and importance of 9/11.

At Lakeforest Elementary School in Greenville, the Greene Lamp Community Action Program hosted a day of service for third- through fifth-grade students.

During the day of service, Greenville city leaders joined the school in a moment of silence and the National Anthem. Speakers reflected on the day in 2001, especially informing those students who were’nt born yet.

“Our kids really need to understand the importance of the sacrifices and the commitments that our people had on September the 11th,” Lakeforest Elementary School Principal Anthony Perkins said. “Also, they need to understand that as a community, we work together and the community builds itself. So, if our students understand that, that’s going to give us a brighter future.”

During the event, students heard individual stories from speakers about where they were during the 9/11 attacks. They encouraged the students to also ask their parents questions about the day and to never forget what the country went through.
