WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — One local school district is celebrating a big achievement in regards to performance.

“We’re super excited to announce that our students performed at a level that shows that each one of our schools of elementary and middle schools increased their school performance score,” Beaufort County Schools Superintendent Dr. Matthew Cheeseman said.

Before the pandemic, Beaufort County Schools had zero low-performing schools. The 2022-23 school year showed seven schools in the county were not meeting expectations, putting them in a low-performance status as a district.

Last year, for the 2023-24 school year, the county experienced huge growth.

“Nine of our 12 schools either met or exceeded growth. Chocowinity Middle School and Northeast both came out of low performance. Our elementary schools in terms of their school performance scores are increasing. We had three schools actually hit a seven point jump overall,” Dr. Cheeseman said.

The numbers are based on test scores. “This is typically looking at mathematics, English, language arts, science at various grade levels,” Dr. Cheeseman said.
