NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) — There is a new initiative in Craven County to help trap, neuter/spay, and release stray cats.

Craven-Pamlico Animal Services is working with a nonprofit organization to catch feral cats, vaccinate, spay and neuter them, and re-release them to where they were originally found. By doing this, they hope the feral cat population will slowly decrease.

“Important thing moving forward with this is letting us know where the issues are. So, those larger colonies, as well as, getting your own animals fixed,” Director of Craven-Pamlico Animal Services Center Dr. Tanya Osler said. “We have quite a few owner surrenders every day here at the shelter. We have actually seen an increase in owner surrenders over last year by about 16 percent.”

They are still in the process of starting this program with the nonprofit they’re working with. They hope for this to be up and running in about a month.
