GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Pitt County Fair gets underway this week for the 104th year. It is put on by the Pitt County American Legion.

Fair organizers are making sure safety is a top priority and it’s more accessible than ever with a new midway for those with disabilities.

“Strollers, people with mobility issues, that’s going to make it a lot easier to get around and enjoy the fair and the food vendors that we have,” Fair Manager Bob Sheck said.

The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office will also be doing its part to ensure safety. “We will have numerous officers at the fair again this year, coupled with a security agency that will offer security guards that will will be doing things such as making sure people are going by the rules, what the rules are,” Pitt County Sheriff Paula Dance said. “Of course, again, this year, no one under the age of 18 without a parent or guardian is something that has been put in place.”

Upon entering the fair, people will go through metal detectors and there are things prohibited from being brought into the fair. “We also are not, of course, allowing firearms into the fair. Alcohol. Those things. We are just there as a security measure to make sure that everyone has a good time,” Sheriff Dance said.

Sheck said the fair is all about the thrills from the rides for him. “My favorite part of the fair are the the big rides. The thrill rides,” Sheck said. “That’s my favorite. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie. So, if we have a lot of adrenaline junkies out there, we can fix you right up.”
