WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — Beaufort County Schools and Beaufort County Board of Elections gave their students an opportunity to speak to county commissioners, school board members, the registrar of deeds, municipal council members and a North Carolina senator Tuesday to celebrate ‘Civics Day’.

Civics Day is a celebration of the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution.

“I think it’s especially important to reach voters. Young, the impressions that they get from these elected officials and what they’re doing today makes an impression on them for the rest of their life,” Beaufort County Director of Elections Kellie Harris Hopkins said. “And if we can impress on them that voting is important and that everybody has a voice, I think that’s a truly amazing thing to do at a young age.”
