WINTERVILLE, N.C (WNCT) — This week is Child Passenger Safety Week. The initiative aims to raise awareness of correctly installing child safety seats in an effort to protect children in vehicles.

ECU Health hosted a free car seat checkup event for the Pitt County community. The event was at Winterville Fire and Rescue, which is the permanent community check-in station.

Families are encouraged to call (252)-756-2515 to make an appointment on a Tuesday or Wednesday with a technician. Technicians from the hospital are available on the third Friday of each month.

Coordinator of ECU Health’s Injury Prevention Program Ellen Walston said that child car safety is something that needs to be emphasized when it comes to parenting.

“You’re driving around town, you may see a child just jumping up in the back of a seat,” she said. “And fortunately, our law enforcement partners do a fantastic job of issuing citations when children are not properly restrained yet. What we really see is so many times, the parents think they’re doing it right and they get that seat in the car yet, it’s too loose.”
