WARSAW, N.C. (WNCT) — Officials with Duplin County Schools confirmed a child brought a gun to Warsaw Elementary School Tuesday.

They said it happened by accident and no shots were fired and no one was injured.

“On Tuesday, Sept. 24, a first grade student accidentally picked up his father’s bookbag, thinking it was his school bag,” Warsaw Elementary School Principal Pamela Murray said. “The father came to the school immediately when he realized that his child had the wrong bag. The contents of the father’s bag contained his personal belongings and the father’s legal firearm.”

Murray went on to say “Upon his arrival, the father shared this information with the school. The bookbag was retrieved and given to the SRO. The SRO contacted the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office and it was determined that at no time did the first grader intend to possess a firearm on campus, harm anyone, or pose a threat to the school. Based on these circumstances, there have been no charges filed at this time.”

Murray said they thank the child’s parent for being diligent and cooperative during this time.
