HAVELOCK, N.C. (WNCT) — The city of Havelock is honoring Gold Star military families for their loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The marker honors those Gold Star families who have lost a loved one while fighting for this country. It was unveiled by other Gold Star families and members of the community who helped get it in place.

James Hunter with Disabled American Veterans said it was important to get a marker in a military community like Havelock, as many Gold Star families live there and he wants to make sure they’re not forgotten.

Gold Star mother Trish Slape spoke at the ceremony, saying she appreciates how supportive the community is and how they can come together. Slape said at her son’s memorial, everyone remembered how he was unapologetically himself.

“He was a good kid and he was a true friend. A lot of people came forward and talked about how he would seek them out, like the quiet kids and he would friend them. And as a parent and, you know, they done good,” Slape said.

If you’re interested in getting one of these markers in your community, reach out to your local garden club.
