North Carolina rainfall totals from Helene

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As two people were dead and more than 14 were injured in North Carolina from Hurricane Helene, there were still more than 700,000 customers in the state without power Saturday from flooding and high winds when the storm hit Friday, according to North Carolina officials.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Saturday that more than 200 people were saved from flooding.

Also, the North Carolina Emergency Management released rainfall totals from the storm — where the mountains were the hardest hit.

Many areas in the mountains received more than 10 inches and more than 30 inches of rain causing “catastrophic flooding,” Cooper’s office said.

Video shows sections of Asheville underwater and a large section of the village of Chimney Rock was wiped out by flooding.

Across North Carolina, 29 counties and 52 towns and cities have issued States of Emergency, in addition to the statewide State of Emergency declared by Cooper.

Gov. Cooper on Friday requested a Major Disaster Declaration from the federal government for North Carolina for 39 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians for federal Public Assistance and Individual Assistance in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Helene.

As of Saturday morning, about 418 state-maintained roads remained closed, mostly due to flooding. Across the area, 11 landslides have been reported.

This includes major closures on Interstates 26 and 40 around Asheville, plus dozens of locations along several U.S. and N.C. highway routes, officials said.
