JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Across Eastern NC, law enforcement agencies are hosting National Night Out events Tuesday.

The event was postponed due to rain in August. Vendors offering food are at the event, live music and the night will end with fireworks.

This is the first National Night Out event for new Jacksonville Police Chief Jarad Phelps, who was sworn in over the summer.

“That’s what National Night Out is all about, is the fellowship,” Chief Phelps said. “And it’s about fellowship to make our community safer. That’s what we’re doing here is getting out, you being together and just making a commitment to do the best we can to make our community safe.”

Chief Phelps said events like this one are important for the community to get to know one another and make connections.
