JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Onslow Memorial Hospital is helping its patients by offering free mammograms as part of the Julie’s Warrior Project.

The foundation began in 2018 and provides free mammogram services for people who are underinsured or uninsured in Onslow County.

Since they’ve started, the organization’s leaders have been able to give more than 400 free checkups. Executive Director at Onslow Memorial Hospital, Thomas Giffin, said people can use the service through the hospital’s cancer department.

“When you’re battling cancer, you get very, very close to your patients you know what their circumstances are and their support systems are and once the cancer department learns that information, this will kick in,” Giffin said.

The fundraising Miles for Mammos Run will take place Oct. 19.
