BETHEL, N.C. (WNCT) – Deputies arrested a Durham man late Saturday night following a shooting that left one person dead.

Around 11:00 p.m. Saturday night, deputies responded to a home in the 2800 block of Latham Road in Bethel after a report of a shooting. In a news release, the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said a victim, Elijah Rashawn Everette, 25, died at the scene.

During the investigation, deputies learned a second person inside the home, Thomas Everette, Jr., 47, had been shot at but was not hurt.

Melvin Lee Vines, 66, of Durham, was also inside the home when deputies arrived. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said Vines was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted first degree murder. Vines was taken to the Pitt County Detention Center and has no bond.

Vines has a first appearance hearing on Monday.
