    84 verified storm-related deaths in North Carolina following Helene: NCDHHS

    NORTH CAROLINA ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — As of Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024, there are 84 verified storm-related deaths in North Carolina following Hurricane Helene, officials announced.

    According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, 30 deaths were due to ‘unknown circumstances,’ while 19 deaths were confirmed drownings.

    Types of death in the state:

    • Unknown circumstances: 30
    • Drowning: 19
    • Landslide: 11
    • Blunt force injuries: 8
    • Wind/tree trauma: 6
    • Motor vehicle downings: 4
    • Motor vehicle crash, includes hydroplane cases: 3
    • Other: 3

    Confirmed deaths by county:

    • Ashe County: 1
    • Avery County: 3
    • Buncombe County: 40
    • Burke County: 1
    • Catawba County: 1
    • Cleveland County: 1
    • Gaston County: 1
    • Henderson County: 7
    • Macon County: 1
    • Madison County: 4
    • McDowell County: 1
    • Mecklenburg County: 1
    • Mitchell County: 2
    • Polk County: 1
    • Rowan County: 2
    • Rutherford County: 3
    • Watauga County: 2
    • Yadkin County: 1
    • Yancey County: 10

    NCDHHS reports ages range from 4 years old to 89 years old. Authorities report the 4-year-old girl died in Catawba County on Sept. 26, 2024, when the vehicle she was in was involved in a two-vehicle crash along a closed, flooded road.

    “We are aware there are additional reports of decedents, and our team is working to verify that these are storm-related deaths,” NCDHHS said on Tuesday. “Life-saving activities will always take priority, and we will continue to work to update this information as appropriately as possible.”
