ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — From federal to grassroots organizations, the communities of western North Carolina continue to make progress toward recovery in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

CBS 17’s Angela Taylor is on the ground in communities all over western North Carolina this week to see the heavy damage, the emotional toll and the resilience of this moment in the state’s history.

In Maggie Valley, a Town Hall has been turned into a makeshift grocery store to feed anyone in need of a meal.

Over in Haywood County, the heaviest flooding from the Pigeon River meant a complete loss for many homeowners and business owners, and it extended to farmers as well.

“We’re just trying to get the trash out right now. We’re hoping that maybe the federal government will clear the road and we can at least try to push our fence back up,” one property owner in Haywood County said.

“Clyde’s gonna really have a challenge. It’s gonna be very difficult to come back,” said Norm Medford, who owns a property there. The property had undergone renovations for the past two years and was finally finished just two weeks before Hurricane Helene’s impacts hit the area.
