JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — During natural disasters, it is also important to remember your pets.

The ASPCA has been on the ground in the Western part of the state ever since Hurricane Helene hit. Wednesday, the organization launched an animal assistance hotline for pet owners.

It provides information on where they can get free pet food and supplies or if they need help finding their pets. They said it’s important to include pets in preparations.

“Plan for your pet as a member of your family and make sure that they are included, that you have a pet-friendly place that you can go if you have been asked to evacuate that you have your pets’ medications, I.D.s, photos, pet carriers, food, water, bowls, food, water,” Director of Disaster Response Susan Anderson said. “All of those important things like you would pack for human members of your family”

They said the best way to help is by contacting the area’s local animal welfare organization directly.

The number for the animal assistance hotline is 888-808-0810 and is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week. There’s a request form at aspca.org/NCanimalhelp
