JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — People in eastern North Carolina are still trying to help our neighbors out west.

Jacksonville Fire and Emergency Services sent it’s third crew out to help Helene victims. The state requested one engine and four people for each crew. The first one they sent out went on September 28, and came back the second of October. They’re doing everything from answering calls for local fire departments to helping evacuate the elderly. Deputy Chief Amy Procopio said that what the crews are seeing is devastating.

“Just people have lived there all their lives and they’ve never witnessed anything like that. With mudslides, flooding, flooding in areas high in the mountains that you would never think would be a problem. So it’s very devastating. And most of those people didn’t have flood insurance to cover their belongings.” said Deputy Chief Amy Procopio.

The third crew will be out there until October 15.
